Do I really need a therapist?
We all run into problems in life that seem too big to handle on our own. While sometimes our pride and fear can get in the way of asking for help, it is important to know that confidential help is available. Not knowing the answers to all life's questions is normal. Making the decision to contact a therapist can be difficult but when you recognize that you need help and are willing to ask for it you show personal strength.

How often will I need to be seen?
After the initial evaluation the psychologist will develop a treatment plan which will be designed to help you reach your therapy goals. While individual treatment varies it is common for new patients to be seen weekly or every other week for a while and then gradually less frequently until the patient and psychologist agree to end the therapy.

Is therapy covered by my insurance?
Because every health care plan is different it is important to consult with your insurance provider. Our doctors work with a variety of insurance carriers including Medicaid and Medicare. Our receptionist can help schedule you with a doctor on your insurance plan or you may have out of network benefits to use when you want to choose a doctor that suits you best who may not be participating in your benefit plan. Psychologists also work with uninsured patients who will pay out of pocket for the services they receive.

How does therapy help?
There are many different types of therapy. At Psychological Services our doctors use a variety of approaches to help individuals, couples and families deal with symptoms of mental illness. Psychologists do not prescribe medication but also work with patients who may take medications to enhance their treatment. Your best approach to therapy is honesty and openness. Being willing to share truthfully will allow you and your doctor to get to the underlying issues in order to correct your thinking or modify your behaviors so you can function as a more productive person, couple or family.

What if I just don't like my doctor?
There should be a certain amount of rapport between you and your psychologist. You may be challenged to look at your thoughts and behaviors in new ways. Therapy can be difficult at times. It is important to feel comfortable with your therapist. If you need a referral to another doctor whose style might be more suited to your needs your psychologist can help you. Our receptionist may be able to guide you to the doctor who will best be able to meet your needs.

What about my privacy?
You can rest assured that Psychological Services will maintain your records with the utmost confidentiality. All our independent practiontioers maintain their own patient files. Our office is fully compliant with the federal regulations known as HIPAA designed to protect your information and limit access to personal data.
