On January 15, 1977, John Engler, Ph.D. began the first full time independent
practice of Clinical Psychology in the State of Nebraska. After having completed
undergraduate and Masters degrees at Creighton University, and Doctorate degree at the
Univserity of Nebraska at Lincoln he worked as Director of the University Counseling
Center at Creighton University, the Children and Youth Project, and as a staff
psychologist at the Immanuel Community Mental Health Center, before beginning
private practice.
The early days of independent practice of psychology were significantly different
from the present. Licensing of psychologists as independent practitioners was new,
and insurance carriers were not willing to reimburse for services. The laborious
task of a psychological evaluation involved much hand scoring of tests, a dictation of the
report, with manual transcription being the rule. The usual turn around time
of two to four weeks for an evaluation report was not uncommon.
As a pioneer in the use of computerized psychological testing, Psychological Services
have been in the forefront of utilization of automated systems for previously tedious
tasks of test scoring and report writing. This has led to a highly efficient
method for providing psychological data to psychologists and referring physicians,
leading to more effective use in the treatment planning process.
Over the course of the past 30 years, many psychologists have come together to labor
as independent practitioners in the offices of Psychological Services. It is with
great pride, and a sense of satisfaction that the professional and support staff of
Psychological Services recognizes their contribution to the City of Omaha, and the
surrounding communities.
During the next few years, changes in the structure of Psychological Services, Inc.
are planned. These changes will be designed in a manner to guarantee the continuation
of the highest level of professional psychological services throughout the new millenium.
